why it's harder not being green...
Today at Vons of all places I realized that there is no excuse for not being green anymore. I was surprised at how fast my cart filled up with usda organic foods. It seemed like just a few weeks ago the choices were slim pickins – now I cradle a container of juicy organic figs, my mouth watering. They even make there own brand of organic Jasmine rice, a precious commodity since Whole Foods is farther than I like to drive for grocerys. Not to mention that we like to refer to this store as Whole Paycheck. Which brings me to my first point: it's harder to use the argument that organic is more expensive since stores like Vons are carrying their 'O' line.
As I begin to see more and more of these eco options, I realize that there is more that I could be doing. Grabbing an avocado I decide I must bring my own produce bags next time. I already bring my own grocery bags, but these are so easy to come by now with there cute designs and at one dollar a piece how can you not buy half a dozen of them. But what to do for fruit and veggies?? I once carried my chic tote through a farmers market, only to realize later that a head of lettuce mysteriously soaked my cell phone which I later had to replace... not very green.
But seriously, with cloth you never have to worry about a bag breaking or tearing. It is definitely harder not being green when it comes to the paper or plastic issue. Just don't forget and leave them in your car. This is an exercise in presence... although after about a month it becomes a new habit to remember to bring them into the store with you, especially if you leave them in your front seat.
My next article will be about green acts that are a little hard - like taking your expired pills and vitamins to an environmentally friendly disposal site... and why it will be even harder to survive if we don't.

Hi Jessica,
I want to know about taking my expired vitamins and pills somewhere instead of just throwing them in the trash!
Thanks for the great blog!
